Action Logging
Tracking what you do to your tank is just as important as tracking what's in it. ReefTanker's Action Log lets you document water changes, dosing, media swaps, and equipment changes — then overlay those events on your parameter charts to see cause and effect.
Action Types
There are four categories of actions you can log. Each has its own form with relevant fields.
Dosing Adjustment
Track supplement dosing for alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate, or phosphate. Log the product, amount, unit, and frequency.
Water Change
Document water changes with volume, percentage of tank water, and the salt mix used. Can link to saved salt mix recipes.
Media Change
Record filter media replacements. Track the media type, quantity, and location in your system.
Equipment Change
Document equipment replacements or setting adjustments. Captures old and new configurations for reference.
Logging an Action
You can log actions from two places: the Quick Actions button on the Dashboard, or the Action History page.
Steps
- 1 Click Quick Actions on the Dashboard, or Log Action on the Action History page
- 2 Choose the action type: Log Dose, Water Change, Equipment Change, or Media Change
- 3 Select a tank from the dropdown (required — every action is tied to a tank)
- 4 Fill in the date/time and type-specific details
- 5 Click Save to log the action
Tip: The date/time defaults to right now, but you can backdate actions. Forgot to log yesterday's water change? Just adjust the date.
Dosing in Detail
The dosing form is the most feature-rich of the four action types. It supports multiple doses in a single entry and integrates with a product database.
Multi-row dosing
You can log multiple supplements at once. For example, if you dose alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium together (a common BRS two-part or three-part routine), add a row for each and submit them all in one go.
Supplement types
Each dose targets one of five supplement categories:
Product selection
The product dropdown filters to match the selected supplement type. Choose from the built-in product database or select Custom to enter any product name manually. The system remembers common products so you don't have to type them each time.
Dosing units
Supported measurement units:
mlgramscupstsptbspozdrops Water Changes
The water change form captures how much water you swapped and what salt mix you used.
Volume & percentage
Enter either the volume in gallons, the percentage of your tank, or both. This helps you track how aggressive your water changes are and spot trends over time.
Salt mix selection
You can link a water change to a saved salt mix recipe or completed batch from the Saltwater Mixes system. Alternatively, type the salt mix name manually for a quick entry.
Linked Parameters
Actions can be linked to specific parameters, which is how they appear as overlays on the Charts & Trends page.
Automatic linking
Dosing actions are automatically linked to their target parameter. When you log an alkalinity dose, it's linked to the alkalinity parameter — so when you view the alkalinity chart, you'll see that dosing event as an orange vertical line.
Water change overlays
Water changes appear as cyan vertical lines on charts. By default, they show on nitrate and phosphate charts since those parameters are most affected by water changes. You can configure which parameters display water change lines using the gear icon on the Charts page.
Action History
The Action History page shows a chronological timeline of everything you've done to your tank, newest first.
Timeline view
Each action is displayed as a card showing the action type icon, timestamp, and a details section with all the specifics — volume for water changes, product and amount for dosing, old/new settings for equipment changes, and so on.
Filtering by tank
Use the Filter by Tank dropdown at the top to show actions for a specific tank or select All Tanks for a combined view.
Editing & deleting
Each action card has edit and delete buttons. Editing lets you correct details like volume or product name. Deleting permanently removes the action from your history.
Tip: The Dashboard also shows your 5 most recent actions in the Dosing Log section. Click through to the full Action History to see everything.
Where Actions Appear
Actions integrate across the app to give you full context on your tank management:
- Dashboard Dosing Log — Shows your 5 most recent actions with type icons and timestamps.
- Charts & Trends — Dosing and water change events appear as vertical lines overlaid on parameter charts.
- Action History — Complete chronological record with full details and editing.
